What is Chapter 06 of ICD-11?

The Chapter 06 of the ICD-11 groups the mental, behavioral and neurodevelopmental disorders. It is the most extensive and clinically relevant chapter of the classification for professionals in mental health, psychiatry, psychology, pediatric neurology and primary care.

In ICD-10, this chapter was equivalent to Chapter F (F00–F99). ICD-11 completely restructures it: it expands the number of diagnostic blocks, updates the terminology, eliminates the artificial distinction between "organic" and "non-organic" disorders, and harmonizes with the DSM-5.

Important news: In ICD-11, sleep disorders and sexual health conditions are separated into their own chapters (07 and 17 respectively), something that in the ICD-10 were mixed within chapter F.

The hierarchy of Chapter 06 has 3 levels:

Coding Guidance

Basic cause of death

According to the WHO Reference Guide, Chapter 06 disorders have specific instructions for mortality coding:

Post-coordination and extension codes

The diagnostics in Chapter 06 can be combined with extension codes of Chapter X to specify:

Post-coordination example: An episode of severe depression with psychotic symptoms would be coded by combining the base code 6A70 (Episodic Depressive Disorder) with the extension codes for severe severity and presence of psychosis.
